ТАЛЛИННСКАЯ СТУДИЯ ГРАМЗАПИСИ. ЗАПИСЬ 1989 Г.

Veera Pahnapuu is one of those rare women who on the days ol ours still sings the traditional Setu folk song. She was brought up in Setumaa, in the village of Jaastrova of the former Jirvesuu rural district. In 1937 she was brought to her husband's farmstead in the nearby Pdrste village where she is living also at present. Here she gave birth to her four children, here her husband passed away. Now she is living alone in her small cottage on the edge of Pihkvamaa; in winter she weaves, in summer grows strawberries. About a hundred runo songs, several fairy-tales, proverbs and other manifestations of Setu oral tradition have been put down from her by the folklorists.
The record presents four children's songs (2, 7, 8, 11) performed traditionally alone. The majority of Setu songlore, however, is performed with the alternation of leader and chorus the latter being always polyphonic (the upper part is sung by a thrill and loud woman's voice, the «killd»; the lower one by «torro», the other voices organized heterophonically). Veera Plhnapuu leads two work songs (2, 3) and a game song (4) which has been derived from an ancient tune hummed to accompany grinding in a hand-mill. Callendar songs are on the disc represented by a swing song (S) which were sung during the Easter in Setumaa. From the especially rich heritage of Setu wedding songs a bride's lament to a village lad (9) and the bride's realations' song sung sending off the bride from her parental home (10) are to be heard. Shorter variants have been chosen to give samples of the Setu lirical songs (12, 13). Both sides of the disc end with the improvisations (6, 14) which in Setumaa are known as Veera Pahnapuu songs.
